Four airports in central Vietnam will suspend operations on Sunday as Typhoon Trami approaches, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) announced.

Phu Bai International Airport in Thua Thien-Hue Province will halt operations from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., while Dong Hoi Airport in Quang Binh Province, home to world’s largest cave Son Doong, will close from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Da Nang International Airport will remain closed from 6 a.m. on Sunday until 4 a.m. on Monday.

Chu Lai Airport in Quang Nam, home to Hoi An ancient town, will suspend services from 10 a.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Monday.

The CAAV stated that the suspensions are necessary due to the potential threat Typhoon Trami poses to aviation safety. The Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation has alerted flights heading to central Vietnam about the closures.

As of 1 p.m. Saturday, the typhoon lay centered to the north of the Paracel Islands, about 440 km away from Da Nang to the east-northeast, packing maximum wind speed of 133 kph.

It is moving west-southwest at 20 kph, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

By 1 p.m. Sunday, the storm would be located above the sea regions off the coast of central Vietnam, moving south-southwest before switching trajectory to east, at 5 kph.

From Saturday night to Monday night, heavy rainfall is expected in areas from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai, with rain levels going up to 700 mm.

The storm has wreaked havoc in the Philippines, causing at least 76 fatalities and prompting the evacuation of 47,500 residents earlier this week.
