Prateek and Myra win U-13 titles in contrasting styles
Panchkula: Prateek Tulsani of Maharashtra proved that consistency triumphs under pressure, defeating Rishaan Chattopadhyay of West Bengal 3-0 in the Under-13 Boys’ final at the UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships at Tau Devi Lal Indoor Hall. Contrastingly, the Girls’ final was a thrilling rollercoaster. Myraa, also from Maharashtra, was in complete control early on, taking a 2-0 lead. But Shariqa Shahid of West Bengal wasn’t done yet—she fought back to level the match 2-2. In the deciding fifth game, Myraa found her composure, playing with both aggression and poise to win 3-2 in a dramatic finish.
Prateek’s 3-0 win over Rishaan was a textbook display of tactical discipline and mental strength. While his game lacked flashy shots, Prateek’s consistency and ability made the difference. Key moments came in the second and third games when Rishaan had opportunities to take control—especially at deuce in the second and 8-9 in the third—but Prateek’s calmness under pressure allowed him to secure the win.
Myraa seemed on the verge of an easy victory with a 2-0 lead, but Shariqa’s grit and adaptability were unexpected. After dropping two games, Shariqa became more aggressive and minimised her errors, levelling the match. However, in the fifth game, Myraa reasserted herself, playing sharper and more confidently to close out the match.
Prateek stamped his authority in the semifinal with a 3-0 victory over Sanjey Arwindh of Tamil Nadu. Although stretched in the first game, Prateek held his nerve, saving three game points before sealing the win. From there, he never looked back. Rishaan, too, dropped a game but finished strong, securing a place in the final with a clinical 3-1 win.
Earlier, Prateek struggled but regrouped to beat Bishal Mandal 3-1 in the Boys’ first quarterfinal. Sanjey Arwindh, on the other hand, had no such issues, breezing past Souswarya Banerjee of Bengal in straight games. Rishaan followed suit with a commanding 3-0 win over Bhavit Singh Bisht of Rajasthan, while Himon Mondal made quick work of Trijal Vohra from Punjab, winning 3-0.
In the women’s competition, Shariqa overcame a tough start against Kamarapu Saanvi of Telangana, who led 2-1 before faltering. Despite a few unforced errors in the third game, Shariqa bounced back with determination, claiming the last two games to secure her spot in the final. Myraa, after dropping the first game to Sreosree from West Bengal, mounted a strong comeback to take control and win 3-1.
Kamarapu, who had won the first game, faced a tough challenge from Ishita Colaso of Goa. The Goan player made it hard for Kamarapu to get easy points, but the Telangana paddler held firm, winning 3-0 to advance. Shariqa also bounced back after losing the first game to Saturya Banerjee of Bengal, winning three straight games for a 3-1 victory.
Myraa, though initially rattled by Khyati Pande of Uttarakhand, recovered from the first-game loss to win 3-1. Sreosree, despite dropping a game, finished strong with a 3-1 win over Divija Paul of Assam to book her semifinal spot.
