62 year old black hole Cygnus
New Delhi. Cygnus X-1, one of the most mysterious objects of space, has once again become the center of discussion for scientists. This black hole, which was discovered about 62 years ago, is now in the headlines due to the extremely powerful energy emission in the new study. New research has revealed that the jets emanating from Cygnus X-1 are generating so much energy, which is believed to be equal to about 10,000 suns.
fast jets of energy roaming in space
According to scientists, the jets emanating from this black hole can spread for millions of light years in space and their speed reaches almost half that of light, i.e. about 1,50,000 kilometers per second. The study was led by scientists at Curtin University and has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Astronomy.
How does a black hole work?
When any matter gets very close to a black hole, it gets trapped in its immense gravitational force. During this process a huge amount of energy is released, which comes out in the form of jets. This theory also matches the predictions of the famous scientist Albert Einstein, which has now been confirmed by actual observations.
What was revealed in the new study?
According to Dr. Steve Prabhu, the lead author of the research, about 10 percent of the total energy of the matter falling into the black hole is released into space through these jets. This was previously believed only theoretically, but now for the first time it has been directly observed and proven.
Special features of black hole
Cygnus X-1 is located about 7,000 light years away from Earth
Its mass is about 21 times more than the Sun.
It exists in a binary system with the star HDE 226868.
Both bodies revolve around each other every 5.6 days
Why is this discovery important?
Cygnus The new discovery will help scientists understand how energy operates in the universe and how vast the impact of black holes can be.
