National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an attack after a gunman opened fire during a marriage function in Jammu on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred at Royal Park in Greater Kailashwhere Abdullah had arrived to attend a wedding ceremony. Surinder Choudharythe Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmirwas also present at the venue when the firing took place.
Accused taken into custody
The accused has been identified as Kamal Singha 63-year-old resident of Jammu. Security personnel quickly overpowered him at the scene after he allegedly attempted to shoot Abdullah with his licensed firearm.
Police officials confirmed that the accused has been taken into custody and moved to a nearby police station for questioning.
Alleged motive revealed during questioning
During interrogation, the accused reportedly told police that he had been planning to kill Farooq Abdullah for years.
According to sources, Singh claimed that it was a personal agenda and said he had been intending to attack Abdullah for nearly two decades.
He reportedly told investigators that he seized the opportunity during the wedding eventbut Abdullah managed to escape unharmed.
Suspect reportedly intoxicated
Officials said the accused appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the incident. Security guards present at the venue quickly intervened and restrained him before any further harm could occur.
Sources added that Singh owns several shops in the old part of Jammu and survives primarily on rental income from those properties.

Deputy Chief Minister present at venue
Farooq Abdullah and Surinder Choudhary had reportedly arrived at the venue to greet National Conference leader B.S. Chouhanwho was hosting the wedding of his daughter. Officials said the leaders had been present at the function for more than an hour before the firing incident occurred.
Omar Abdullah questions security lapse
Reacting to the incident, Omar AbdullahChief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and son of Farooq Abdullah, expressed concern over the security breach.
He said his father had a “very close shave” and questioned how an individual carrying a loaded weapon managed to come within point-blank range of a leader protected under Z+ security cover.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and the security lapse at the event.
