7 people died, 21 injured when double decker bus overturned on Lucknow Purvanchal Expressway; CM Yogi expressed grief

Lucknow: A heart-wrenching road accident took place in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, on Monday 23 February. A sleeper bus went out of control and overturned near Hasanpur in Gosaiganj area on Purvanchal Expressway.

At least 7 passengers died and 21 people were seriously injured in this accident. However, the death toll may increase. The bus was going from Ludhiana to Darbhanga and there were about 40 passengers in it.

In the preliminary investigation, the police believe that the driver had fallen asleep, due to which the bus fell on the roadside at high speed. Being a sleeper coach, many passengers fell down from the upper berth and suffered serious injuries. Some passengers were trapped inside the bus.

Injured were taken to hospital

As soon as information about the accident was received, police, fire brigade, SDRF and local people reached the spot. The bus was lifted with the help of a crane. The injured were immediately admitted to the trauma center and nearby hospitals. The condition of some of the injured is said to be critical and they have been kept in ICU. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for postmortem.

There was chaos on the road after the accident. People were screaming and crying. Local residents first started rescue operations. The wreckage of the bus was spread on the road. There was a traffic jam and traffic was affected for several hours. Officials carried out the cleaning work with cranes and heavy machinery.

CM Yogi extended his helping hand

Police have registered a case against the bus driver and owner. Overspeeding, overloading and fitness of the driver are being examined in the investigation. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the accident and directed to provide Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased and all possible help for the treatment of the injured.

The Transport Department has decided to increase checking of sleeper buses on the expressway. This accident once again exposes the negligence towards road safety.
