Twelve people in the southern province of Ben Tre have been arrested for their involvement in an online gambling network worth over VND1.8 trillion ($72.1 million), authorities confirmed.

Ben Tre police, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, apprehended Vo Vu Lam and 11 others on Tuesday as part of an investigation into gambling and the organization of illegal gambling activities.

Lam, along with two associates, Ngo Anh Khoa and Nguyen Minh Thoi, were identified as the ringleaders. Police are also investigating the involvement of 60 additional individuals in Ben Tre and HCMC to determine their roles in the operation.

According to authorities, Lam and his accomplices confessed to running the gambling network across several websites since late 2023. The ring reportedly consisted of 30 branches, involving hundreds of accounts.

Police seized VND1.8 billion in cash, as well as jewelry, laptops, tablets, phones and weapons. The group allegedly used advanced technology, foreign social media platforms, fake SIM cards and fraudulent bank accounts to facilitate transactions and manage the illegal operation.

The investigation is ongoing.
