73 seats in 19 states of the country will be vacant
New Delhi, 27 December 2025 : Big changes will be seen in Indian politics in the year 2026. A total of 73 Rajya Sabha seats are going to become vacant by the end of the year, on which new MPs will be elected. These elections to be held in April, June and November 2026 will decide whether the ruling NDA will become strong in the Upper House or the opposition will show its strength.
Many prominent faces of the country are included in the list of leaders retiring in 2026. In which Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former PM H.D. Names like Deve Gowda, Sharad Pawar, Digvijay Singh, Shibu Soren and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri are included. The tenure of Shaktisinh Gohil and Narhari Amin from Gujarat will also be completed.

Next year, 73 seats will be vacant from April to November 2026. In April 2026, 37 Rajya Sabha seats from 10 states will become vacant. Five seats of Bihar, five of Bengal, 2 of Telangana, 6 of Tamil Nadu, 4 of Odisha, 7 of Maharashtra, 1 of Himachal, 2 of Haryana, 2 of Chhattisgarh and 3 seats of Assam will be vacant. 25 seats in 10 states will become vacant in June 2026.
4 seats of Andhra Pradesh, 4 of Gujarat, 4 of Karnataka, 3 of Madhya Pradesh, 3 of Rajya Sabha, 2 of Jharkhand, one of Arunachal Pradesh, one of Manipur and one of Mizoram will be vacant. Similarly, ten seats of Uttar Pradesh and one seat of Uttarakhand will become vacant in November 2026.
Currently, NDA has 129 MPs and the opposition has 78 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. Out of 10 seats in Uttar Pradesh, BJP is expected to get 7 seats and SP is expected to get 2 seats, while there will be a race on 1 seat. In the changed equations in Bihar, NDA may get 4 seats, due to which the parties of Upendra Kushwaha and Jitan Ram Manjhi are increasing pressure. Whereas Mahayuti is expected to win 6 seats in Maharashtra.
According to political analysts, out of the 73 seats for which elections are to be held, currently BJP has 43 seats. After the 2026 elections, NDA seats may increase to 48. If this happens, it will be easier for the government to pass any controversial law in the Rajya Sabha. The tenure of former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will also end in March 2026.
