Philippines Earthquake: On Monday, a massive earthquake of 8.1 magnitude occurred in the Philippines, after which many videos surfaced on social media in which buildings are seen collapsing. Due to this earthquake, a tsunami warning has been issued and people from the affected areas are being evacuated to safe places. According to Bloomberg, high school and university buildings have also been damaged due to the strong tremors in many parts of the country. This earthquake occurred near Mindanao island in the southern Philippines. Initial estimates warn of damage and dangerous tsunami waves.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a strong aftershock of magnitude 6.1 was also felt in the southern Philippines. According to the USGS, the second earthquake occurred about eight kilometers north-northwest of Sarangani province on Mindanao island, at a depth of 67 kilometers (42 miles).

Tsunami warning issued

PHIVOLCS informed that tsunami waves more than one meter higher than the normal tide level may occur in the affected coastal areas. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that some coastal areas of the Philippines could see waves up to three meters high, while parts of Indonesia and Malaysia could see waves up to one meter high. Indonesia’s Geophysics Agency has also issued a tsunami warning for people living in the north-eastern coastal areas of the country. Small waves are also expected in Taiwan, Japan, Guam, Papua New Guinea and many island areas of the Pacific Ocean.

How much was the loss?

Although there was no immediate news of any death, local officials said that aftershocks were being felt in the area and damage assessment was underway. Furniture fell, televisions and other household items were damaged in areas around the city of General Santos, located near the epicenter, DZBB radio reported. General Santos’ disaster management office said aftershocks were continuing and officials were investigating reports of damage and injuries.
