Obnews Digital Desk: In a major decision on January 16, the Union Cabinet decided to constitute the 8th Pay Commission to revise the salaries of central government employees and allowances of pensioners. In such a situation, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the decision to constitute the 8th Pay Commission was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Since 1947, seven Central Pay Commissions have been formed. A new pay commission is constituted every 10 years to revise the salaries of central employees and pensioners. Meanwhile, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, “Constituting the 8th Pay Commission before the tenure of the 7th Pay Commission ends in 2026 will give us enough time to receive recommendations.” The minister also said that the chairperson and two members of the commission will be appointed soon and consultations will be held with the central and state governments as well as other stakeholders.

Highlights of 8th Pay Commission announcement

  • News agency PTI, citing unnamed sources, said that the formation of the 8th Pay Commission will lead to an increase in the salaries of about 50 lakh central government employees, including defense personnel.
