8th Pay Commission: Big hike to ₹18,000 basic-pay employees?

New Delhi. The discussion about 8th Pay Commission for central employees is now in full swing. The most important topic is the Fitment Factor, which directly decides the basic salary of the employees. However, its official announcement has not been made yet by the government.

In the last 7th Pay Commission, the fitment factor was 2.57, due to which the minimum basic salary increased from ₹ 7,000 to ₹ 18,000. Now in the 8th Pay Commission, three major estimates are being discussed regarding this: 1.92, 2.08 and 2.86.

Importance of Fitment Factor:

The fitment factor decides by how many times the existing basic pay will be increased. The formula is simple: New Basic Salary = Existing Basic Pay × Fitment Factor. This simply means that if the fitment factor is higher, the basic salary of the employees will also increase more.

Possible salary increase:

If the current basic pay is ₹18,000, the new salary depending on different fitment factors could be as follows:

Level 1, 7th Pay Commission Basic Pay: ₹18,000

At 1.92 fitment factor: ₹34,560

At 2.08 fitment factor: ₹37,440

At 2.86 fitment factor: ₹51,480
