Government’s update on 8th Pay Commission, demand to increase fitment factor to 3.25; Work will be completed in 18 months
8th Pay Commission Latest Update: The Central Government has given an important information regarding the Eighth Pay Commission in its reply given in the Lok Sabha on March 23, 2026. The government said that the commission is currently working on changes in the salary, allowances and pension of central government employees and their aim is to complete it within 18 months of its formation. Through a resolution on November 3, 2025, the government constituted a new pay commission.

Pay structure under 6th Pay Commission
The Sixth Pay Commission was notified in March 2008 and came into effect from 1 January 2006. The minimum entry-level salary in Pay Band-1 was Rs 6,600 (Rs 4,860 pay in band + Rs 1,800 grade pay). The maximum salary at the secretary level was Rs 80,000, with a minimum-to-maximum ratio of 1:12, while the basic pay of a Cabinet Secretary was Rs 90,000.

Salary structure under 7th pay commission
7th CPC introduced pay matrix system replacing pay bands and grade pay. The status of an employee based on grade pay is now determined by his level in the pay matrix. A uniform fitment factor of 2.57 was applied, increasing his basic salary by 2.57 times. The recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission came into effect from January 1, 2026.

How much will the salary increase in the 8th Pay Commission?
The 7th Pay Commission ends on December 31, 2025. After which the 8th Pay Commission is expected to come into effect from January 1, 2026, with 18 months to submit its report and an additional 3-6 months for implementation.
