The argument being made in the media reports is that the month of July is now near and inflation remains at a high level. Amidst this, there is a possibility that employees and pensioners may once again get the benefit of increase in dearness allowance. However, nothing has been said officially from the government yet. But the new inflation figures have further increased the expectations of salary revision of the employees.
DA increases twice a year
It is noteworthy that the Central Government increases the dearness allowance of its employees twice a year. Often, these hikes are implemented from the months of January and July. This allowance helps in providing relief to government employees and pensioners from rising inflation. The final dearness allowance (DA) rate is calculated based on the Consumer Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW), which tracks changes in retail prices. After receiving the necessary data, the government calculates the new rate before taking cabinet approval.
Since the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission have not yet been implemented, government employees and pensioners will continue to get the benefit of DA increase under the 7th Pay Commission structure.
Continuous increase in inflation
According to the latest data released by the ministry, in the month of May retail inflation rate It was 3.93%, which was recorded at 3.48% in April. At the same time, the inflation rate in rural areas increased from 3.7% to 4.25%, while in urban areas the inflation rate increased from 3.16% to 3.53%. The effect of inflation was also seen on the prices of food items. According to the All India Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), food inflation stood at 4.78% in May, which was recorded at 4.20% in the month of April. In rural areas it increased to 4.85%, while in urban areas it reached 4.66%.

Current dearness allowance to employees
The government last increased the dearness allowance of central employees in April 2026. It is effective from January 1, 2026. Under this amendment, a two percent increase in DA was approved. After this decision of the government, the employees dearness allowance And dearness relief for pensioners was increased from 58% to 60% of basic salary. The next dearness allowance revision to be implemented from July 2026 is yet to be announced. However, from the new inflation data it is being estimated that dearness allowance may still increase by 2 to 3 percent.
