9 Confirmed Changes On The New Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner is awaiting a generational update that is expected to bring a host of changes to the SUV. Soon after the ninth generation hilux was unveiled in Thailand, rumours of the Fortuner getting a corresponding update surfaced. More recently, the new Fortuner was spied on test, revealing finer details of what to expect. Based on the same, here are 9 things that would change on the new-generation Fortuner.

New Headlamps

Spy shots have confirmed that the new Fortuner will get a Hilux-like front fascia. It will look sharper, modern and more aggressive. It will have slimmer, more angular headlamps with sleek DRLs. The outgoing Fortuner, in contrast, has a more imposing design for its headlights.

On the new model, the headlamps will likely be connected by an applique. On the Hilux, this has ‘Toyota’ spelled out. A similar treatment can be expected on the Fortuner as well. The camouflage on the test mules limits our ability to confirm these details.

New Front Bumper

The front bumper will be new and will likely have notable design differences from that of the Hilux. What looks like a strip placed below the actual headlamps could be indicator lamps, even though we can’t confirm it yet.

New Grille

The new Fortuner will get a new, large, rectangular grille, as can be seen in the spy shots. This will have a mesh pattern, as suggested by these images, even though finer details remain unknown.

Redesigned Tailgate And New Tail Lamps

There will be notable changes to the design of the rear end as well. The tailgate is expected to be restyled and the LED tail lamps will also get a new design. Another possibility, though not confirmed, is of the tail lamps getting a connecting light bar. Overall, the rear section is expected to look wider and more squared-off.

The side profile remains largely unchanged in the spy shots. The window line, roofline, functional roof rails, side step, and overall silhouette look very similar to those of the current Fortuner. For a full generational update, this conservative approach may surprise many. But again, that’s something Toyota is known for- conservative design and thoughtful, reliable, and old-school engineering. The SUV seems to have solid road presence even with the new shape.

New Interior Trims

The new Fortuner is expected to get major improvements inside. The cabin layout will see improvements, and so will be the colours and trims used.

ADAS Incoming

Features like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) will be added, at least on the global spec. It remains to be seen if these would be offered on the Indian model. From what the spy shots show, this will be level 2 suite offering functions like adaptive cruise control, lane assist and autonomous emergency braking. We would love to see Toyota offer this in India as well, as it would allow the Fortuner to close the tech gap with SUVs that are much less expensive and keep owners happy.

Larger Touchscreen

The new Fortuner will also come with a larger, easier-to-use infotainment touchscreen. The outgoing model, despite its hefty price tag, comes with an 8-inch touchscreen. Today, we know how much screen size matters in making usage easier. Most vehicles now offer large screens that are easier to interact with. Toyota is expected to do the same with the new-generation Fortuner.

The ninth generation Hilux comes with a 12.3-inch freestanding touchscreen running Toyota’s latest software. The same is likely to be introduced on the new Fortuner. There will be support for wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto as well.

Full TFT Instrument Cluster

And finally, the outgoing model’s partly digital instrument cluster will likely be replaced with the full-width TFT instrument cluster seen on the new Hilux or a better version. There may be more additions and changes in the feature list, details of which will only surface closer to the reveal.

Expected Powertrains

The India-spec Fortuner is expected to retain the outgoing model’s engine options- 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel, offered with manual and automatic transmissions. A 48V mild-hybrid diesel will likely be introduced later. We expect the new-generation Fortuner to break cover around mid-2026. India launch could follow shortly after.
