Mohsin Naqvi ran away with India’s trophy
Till now it was fine, but after the match was over, such a controversy arose in the trophy presentation ceremony that the winning Indian team did not get the trophy. The Indian team had refused to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, while Naqvi remained adamant that he would hand over the trophy. The result was that the ceremony ended and the trophy was not given to anyone.
That night the Indian players were forced to celebrate without the trophy. Later reports said that Naqvi took the trophy to his hotel room. And then later the news came that the trophy went under the control of ACC.
There were many attempts to take the trophy
The matter did not stop here. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav had also said after the final that the champion team deserves the trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed displeasure over this entire incident and called it against the spirit of the game. Some reports claimed that India wanted the trophy to be handed over to a neutral official, but a consensus could not be reached.
After this this issue also came up in the ACC meetings. According to media reports, Mohsin Naqvi expressed regret over the controversy, but did not back out from his condition of handing over the trophy personally. Naqvi is simultaneously playing the role of Pakistan’s Home Minister, PCB chief and still the ACC President. In April 2025, he took over the post of President of the Asian Cricket Council. In such a situation, the trophy controversy has gone beyond cricket and has become a matter of prestige and political message.
At present the situation is that the title is registered in the name of the Indian team which won the Asia Cup, but the trophy has still not reached its hands.
