The economy of West Bengal has been performing poorly for several decades

Live Hindi News :- According to a report released by the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Committee, West Bengal's economy has been in a bad shape for decades. The report indicated that southern states have performed much better than other states and currently (in 2023-24) five states namely Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu contribute to nearly 30% of the country's GDP. Sanjeev Sanyal and Akanksha Arora of the Economic Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) have released a report on the economic performance of each state for the financial years 1960-61 to 2023-24.

The report said that development in the eastern part of the country remains worrisome, especially West Bengal's GDP and per capita income are declining rapidly. While West Bengal's share in the country's GDP was 10.5% in 1960-61, it has currently (in 2023-24) come down to 5.6%. Similarly, in terms of per capita income, West Bengal was ranked third in 1960-61, when West Bengal's average was 127.5% of the national average, which has now (in 2023-24) fallen to 83.7%.

At the same time, the report also states that the southern states including Tamil Nadu have achieved remarkable economic progress. It has been told that Tamil Nadu's share in India's GDP was 8.7% in 1960-61 and now (in 2023-24) has increased to 8.9%. In terms of per capita income, Tamil Nadu's average compared to the national average has increased from 109.2% in 1960-61 to 171.1% in 2023-24.

In terms of GDP, currently (till 2023-24), the share of Gujarat is 8.1%, Maharashtra is 13.3%, Uttar Pradesh is 9.5%, Karnataka is 8.2%, Kerala is 3.8%, Andhra and Telangana have a combined share of 9.7% as well, compared to the national average currently (in 2023-24) Gujarat is 160.7%, Maharashtra 150.7%, Uttar Pradesh 171.1%, Karnataka 180.7%, Kerala 152.5%, Andhra Pradesh 131.6% and Telangana 193.6%.

The report also states that states other than West Bengal have performed excellently among the maritime states. The report states that since the economic liberalisation brought in 1991, the southern states have performed much better than other states and currently (in 2023-24) five states namely Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu contribute to about 30% of the country's GDP.
