Swollen eyes and face in the morning: Is it just lack of sleep or a kidney warning?

Some people get swelling in the eyes in the morning and the face looks puffy. The reason for this can also be staying up late, lack of sleep and wrong sleeping position. However, it should not be limited to this only. Swelling on the face for a long time can also be a sign of kidney disease. This condition should be considered a serious health problem and should be immediately consulted to a doctor.

According to Dr. Bhumesh Tyagi, Professor of Internal Medicine Department of Sharda Hospital, many times we associate kidney disease only with the changes in urine, but it is not necessary. Due to impaired kidney function or affected kidney health, some symptoms may appear in other parts of the body as well. One of the earliest signs may be swelling around the eyes, especially in the morning. We call this periorbital puffiness, and it can happen when the kidneys start leaking protein into the urine.

When kidneys begin to fail, a special protein called albumin helps retain fluid in the blood vessels. When the kidneys’ tiny filtering units are damaged, albumin is released into the urine. Due to this, protein deficiency starts and water starts reaching the tissues. Now this condition can be further aggravated by your sleeping posture. When you sleep and lie flat, body fluid accumulates in the soft tissues, especially around the eyes, but this tends to improve later in the day. When you walk, gravity forces fluid into your feet or toes. Due to this, swelling of the face starts reducing.

Apart from kidney related problems, lack of sleep, allergies, dehydration or salty foods can further increase the problem of swelling. Along with this, some other symptoms like foamy urine, swelling in ankle, fatigue and increase in blood pressure are also dangerous. In such a situation, if you are a diabetic patient, have high blood pressure or someone in the family has kidney disease, then you need to be careful.
