Supreme Court stays fine of Rs 1,000 crore imposed on Punjab government

Latest News :- The Supreme Court has stayed the fine of Rs 1,000 crore imposed on the Punjab government for failure in solid waste management. Despite repeated warnings, the Punjab state government has failed in solid waste management, an important environmental issue, due to non-compliance of solid waste management rules. After this, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 crore on the Punjab government. A petition was filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Punjab Government against this order.

In this case, this petition came up for hearing yesterday before Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JP Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra. The judges heard the petition and stayed the fine of Rs 1,000 crore imposed by the Green Tribunal. Also asked the Chief Secretary of Punjab why a case should not be initiated for the failure in solid waste management and ordered to send a notice to the concerned senior officials. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared for the Punjab state government.
