Karnataka Congress MLA Satish jailed in illegal iron ore export case

Latest News :- A special court has sentenced 7 people, including Karnataka Congress MLA Satish Sale, to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment in the illegal iron ore export case. Complaints have been received that iron ore is being illegally mined in Bellary district of Karnataka and exported to foreign countries from Belagheri port. In this case, authorities seized several tons of iron ore stored in Pelageri port. Karnataka Lokayukta had conducted an investigation in this regard in 2010. Preliminary investigation has revealed that around 8 lakh tonnes of iron ore was transported from Bellary to Belagheri port without permission from Customs, Forest or Transport Department.

In 2012, the Supreme Court ordered the CBI to investigate the case. Also, it was revealed that Mallikarjun Shipping Company, owned by Congress MLA from Karwar constituency, Satish Sale, was involved in this illegal export. After this, a case was filed against SAIL and others in this regard in the special court that hears cases against MLAs and MPs. Satish Sail was arrested. He got bail after a year. Investigation revealed that iron ore worth Rs 250 crore was exported illegally. Charges were filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act.

After investigation in this case, the special court gave its verdict on 24th that 7 people including Satish Sail are guilty. Port Security Deputy Officer Mahesh Pillay, Karatapudi Mahesh, KV Nagaraj, Prem Chand Garg, KV Govindaraju and Chetan Shah are the other six accused. After this all the accused were arrested and lodged in Bengaluru Central Jail.

In this case, Special Court Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhatt yesterday sentenced all the accused to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment. He also imposed a fine of Rs 44 crore on all of them. A fine of Rs 15 crore was imposed on SAIL alone. Former Lokayukta judge Santosh Hegde, who heard the case for the first time, said, “This judgment will be a lesson to all wrongdoers.
