Latest News :- The second season of the Chennai Grand Masters Chess Series will begin on November 5 at the Anna Centenary Library complex in Kotturpuram, Chennai. The tournament is organized by Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority in collaboration with FIDE. This time the competitions will be held in two categories called Masters and Challengers. In the Masters category, Indian Grandmaster Arjun Ericasi (2,797), who recently won the WR Chess Masters Trophy and is ranked third in the world, will be participating for the second time.
He is joined by American Grandmaster Levon Aronian (2,738), French Grandmaster Maxime Vachier Lagrave (2,735), Iranian Grandmaster Parham Maqsoodloo (2,719), Amin Tabatabei (2,702), Russian Grandmaster Alexey Sarana (2,717), Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujarati (2,726). ) and Arvind Chidambaram (2,698) are also participating.
Arvind Chidambaram is from Madurai region of Tamil Nadu. The average rating of the players who took part in the series last time was 2,711. It has now increased to 2,729. This classically organized tournament consists of 7 rounds. Each player will face another opponent once. The player with the most points at the end of 7 rounds wins.
The total prize money of this series is Rs 70 lakh. The topper in the Masters category will be given a prize of Rs 15 lakh. The second runner-up will receive prize money of Rs 10 lakh. The third to eighth place winners will be awarded prizes of Rs 8 lakh, Rs 5 lakh, Rs 4 lakh, Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh respectively. This series is prominent in the FIDE circuit. D. Gukesh had won the Chennai Grand Masters competition held last year. His scores in this series helped him qualify for the Candidates Chess Tournament. This victory is a big step in his journey towards becoming world champion.
Gukesh, who won the Candidates Chess Tournament, is set to play against defending champion Ding Liren of China in the World Chess Championship to be held in Singapore in November. Arjun Ericasi is now in the same position as Gukesh was in last year at the Chennai Grand Masters, so this series is important for him. If Arjun Ericassi wins the Chennai Grand Masters Series, he is likely to qualify for the Candidates Series.
This time the newly added challengers in the Chennai Grand Masters series are Raunak Sathwani (2,659), Abhimanyu Puranik (2,639), Karthikeyan Murali (2,624), Leon Mendonca (2,622), Pranav (2,609), Pranesh (2,580), Harika Dronavalli (2,493 ) ), R.Vaishali (2,486) 8 Indian Grandmasters will participate and play. R. Vaishali, Karthikeyan Murali and Pranesh are from Tamil Nadu.
A total prize money of Rs 20 lakh is to be given in the Challengers category. The winner will receive prize money of Rs 6 lakh. The second runner-up will be awarded a prize of Rs 4 lakh. Prizes of Rs 3.2 lakh, Rs 2 lakh, Rs 1.6 lakh, Rs 1.4 lakh, Rs 1 lakh and Rs 80 thousand will be given to third to eighth places respectively.
An announcement program regarding this match was organized yesterday at Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.
