Rishabh Pant equals MS Dhoni’s record with 6th century in comeback Test

India’s Rishabh Pant made a memorable return to Test cricket as he smashed a record-equalling century against Bangladesh in Chennai on Saturday (September 21).

On the third day of the first Test between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Pant scored a superb 109 off 128 balls with 13 fours and four sixes.

This was Pant’s sixth century in Test cricket and he has now equalled former captain MS Dhoni’s tally of Test centuries.

Pant and Dhoni hold the joint record for most Test hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper. While Dhoni’s six Test tons came in his 90-match illustrious career, Pant has taken just 34 Test to score six centuries.

Left-handed Pant took 58 innings to reach six Test centuries while Dhoni needed 144 innings.

The ongoing Test is Pant’s comeback game in the five-day format after more than 600 days. He was involved in a horrific car crash in December 2022 and after that he worked hard to make a comeback to the Indian team.

Recently, he was part of the Rohit Sharma-led side that won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the US and Caribbean islands.

Saturday also saw another century by an Indian batter as Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 119 off 176 with 10 fours and four sixes. Gill and Pant added 167 runs for the fourth wicket as India declared their second innings at 287 for four.

The hosts have set a mammoth 515-run target for Bangladesh to win the Test.
