Chess Olympiad: Vantika draws against America in the ninth round, keeps gold hopes alive

Budapest: This time in the 45th Chess Olympiad, Vantika did not disappoint the team and played a draw with America by performing brilliantly. Apart from Vantika, R Vaishali could not show her talent in the women's team today. Whereas D Harika was given rest.

International Master Vantika Agrawal performed brilliantly in the hour of need and defeated Grandmaster Irina Krush, with the help of which Indian women's team played a 2-2 draw with the United States in the ninth round of the 45th Chess Olympiad. Apart from this, India's men's team shared points with Uzbekistan in the Chess Olympiad.

The Indian team management rested out-of-form D Harika but R Vaishali lost to Gulrukhbegum Tokhirjonova on the top board. On the second board, Divya Deshmukh drew with Karissa Yip. The match between Tania Sachdev and Alice Lee also ended in a draw. After this, the entire responsibility fell on Vantika who did not disappoint and defeated a higher ranked opponent.

India now has 15 points and will have to win both the last rounds to keep the gold medal hopes alive. Kazakhstan is on top with 16 points after defeating Poland 2.5-1.5. India is in second place and nine teams are in third place with 14 points.

In the next round, Kazakhstan will face Georgia and India will face China. In the open category, the Indian men's team played a draw with defending champion Uzbekistan. After eight consecutive wins, if India had won in the ninth round as well, the gold medal would have been assured.

India's Arjun Erigesi could not take advantage of his opponent Shamsiddin Vakhidov's mistake and played a draw. D Gukesh and Nodirbek Abdusattorov's game also ended in a draw. R Praggnanandhaa drew with Javokhir Sindharov and Vidit Gujrathi drew with Jakhongir Vakhidov.

The Indian men's team now has 17 points after nine rounds. Now it has to play against America which defeated Hungary. America, Uzbekistan and China are in second place with 15 points.
