Ridley Scott eyes third trip to ancient Rome with 'Gladiator 3'

WASHINGTON Washington: Filmmaker Ridley Scott has announced plans for the third instalment of the 'Gladiator' franchise even ahead of the release of the much-awaited 'Gladiator II', which is scheduled to hit theatres on November 22. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 86-year-old filmmaker revealed, “I want to move on to Gladiator III. There's already an idea,” indicating that the creative wheels are already in motion for the next chapter.

Scott's vision for 'Gladiator 3' draws inspiration from the iconic story of 'The Godfather Part II'. He expressed interest in exploring similar themes in the classic film, showcasing his intention to delve deeper into character development and narrative complexity. According to The Hollywood Reporter, news of a potential sequel first surfaced after French publication 'Premiere' shared similar insights from Scott. As excitement grows for 'Gladiator II', which is coming two decades after the original film, which won five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, Scott's enthusiasm for the future of the franchise is evident.

'Gladiator II' features a star-studded cast including Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn and Connie Nielsen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott is also working on a Bee Gees biopic at Paramount, which is expected to begin production next year in London and Miami.

Meanwhile, filmmaker Roland Emmerich has announced that his upcoming gladiator-themed TV series, 'Those About to Die', will also take inspiration from 'The Godfather Part II', specifically using flashbacks.

While both projects reference the same source material — Daniel P. Mannix's novels — they will approach their stories in different ways. Scott is optimistic about 'Gladiator II,' saying it “could be even more extraordinary than the first.” That confidence was also evident during his appearance at CinemaCon in April, where he shared early footage from the film.
