Chennai: On the first day of the test against Bangladesh, Ashwin not only broke records by scoring a century but also gave new hope to the team. R Ashwin believes that it is better to try Rishabh Pant's strategy for this pitch. R Ashwin also talked about the Chennai pitch after the match.

After smashing his sixth long-format century during the first Test against Bangladesh on Thursday after the team's top-order collapsed, star Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin said sometimes it is better to bat hard like Rishabh Pant.

Ashwin's score on day one

At stumps on Day 1, Ashwin was unbeaten at the crease on 102 runs off 112 balls at a strike rate of 91.07. He hit 10 fours and 2 sixes during his time at the crease.

Jadeja helped

“On a surface like this, it's better to play hard like Rishabh did. It's an old-style Chennai surface with bounce and carry… it's nice to play when there's bounce and carry, I enjoyed it today,” Ashwin was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Ashwin further said, “Jadeja really helped me, there was a time when I was sweating and getting tired, but Jaddu helped me during this period. He is solid and one of our best batsmen. He told me that we don't need to convert two into three, which was useful for me.”

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl first in the first Chennai Test of the two-match series with India. India's top order collapsed and the team was struggling at 34/3.

Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (56 off 118 balls with nine fours) and Rishabh Pant (39 off 52 balls with six fours) added 62 runs for the fourth wicket to put India in the game.

Hasan shines for Bangladesh

But, India folded for 144/6 and Ashwin and Jadeja (86* off 117 balls with 10 fours and two sixes) added an unbeaten 195-run stand to end the day at 339/6.

Hasan Mahmud (4/58) was the top bowler for Bangladesh, destroying the Indian top order, dismissing captain Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6).
