Sri Lanka Presidential Election 2024: Anura Disanayake is going to become the new President of Sri Lanka, had talked about cancelling the Adani project

New Delhi. In the general elections of Sri Lanka, outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe has faced a major upset at the hands of leftist leader Anura Kumara Disanayake. Disanayake has registered a landslide victory. He will be the next President of Sri Lanka. Anura Kumara's victory in the election is no less than a shock for India. He is considered a supporter of China and during the election campaign he had promised the Sri Lankan people that if he becomes the President, he will cancel Adani's projects in Sri Lanka.

Promise to cancel Adani's project Anura Kumara's party JPV had opposed the Peace Keeping Force sent by India in the 1980s. India had sent this force to Sri Lanka at that time to eliminate LTTE. During the recent election campaign, Disanayake had promised the Sri Lankan people that if he forms the government, he will cancel Adani Wind Power Project. He says that the Adani Project is a danger to Sri Lanka's energy sovereignty.

Voting was held on 21 September to elect the 10th President in Sri Lanka. Counting of votes began after 5 pm yesterday. About 75 percent of the 1 crore 70 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the presidential election. 83 percent voting was recorded in the last presidential election held in November 2019.

According to the data of Sri Lanka Election Commission, Leftist leader Anura Kumara Disanayake is close to winning the presidential election with 52 percent votes. Outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe is running in third place with 16 percent votes. Sajish Premadasa is in second place with 22 percent votes. Premadasa will once again be seen in the role of the main opposition leader. Let us tell you that this is the first election in Sri Lanka after the economic crisis of 2022.

Ranil Wickremesinghe's Foreign Minister Ali Sabri congratulated Dissanayake for his victory in a post on X. He wrote that 'After a long and tiring campaign, the results of the Presidential Election are now clear. I campaigned vigorously for President Ranil Wickremesinghe, but the people of Sri Lanka have made their decision and I fully respect their mandate for Anura Kumara Dissanayake. In a democracy it is important to respect the decision of the people and I am accepting it without hesitation. Hearty congratulations to Dissanayake and his team on their victory.'

Dissanayake's NPP got only 3 percent of the votes in the last election. Sri Lanka's economic crisis has proved to be an opportunity for Dissanayake. He contested this election with the promise of changing the country's corrupt political culture and the public has expressed its faith in him. Voters in Sri Lanka elect a winner by placing three candidates in order of preference. If a candidate gets an absolute majority, he is declared the winner. If a majority is not obtained, a second round of counting begins, in which second and third preference votes are taken into account.

Who is Anura Kumara?

Anura Kumara is currently an MP from Colombo. Anura, popularly known as AKD, is currently leading two political parties – People's Liberation Front (JVP) and National People's Power (NPP). He is considered a leader with Marxist ideology in Sri Lanka. Disanayake was born on 24 November 1968. Anura Kumara is considered a supporter of China. After voting on Saturday, he was quoted by AFP as saying that our country needs a new political culture. During the election campaign, he had promised that he would dissolve the Parliament within 45 days of coming to power. He had promised to empower the weaker sections of the society and sustainable development.

Is Dissanayake anti-India?

Experts in the matter say that there is a high possibility that after the coronation, Disanayake will be more inclined towards China. The Week says that his party JVP was accused of Chinese help during his campaign in 2021. In an interview to Daily Mirror Sri Lanka, Disanayake had said that someone had claimed that I had spent Rs 70 million on foreign trips. I visited there on the invitation of the governments of India and China. The governments of India and China had borne all the expenses.
