‘Proud moment’: Social media reacts as India script history in 45th Chess Olympiad

New Delhi: India’s men’s team registered a dominant victory against Slovenia to clinch their first-ever gold medal in the Chess Olympiad in Budapest on Sunday, September 22. R Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi and Pentala Harikrishna won their respective finals and led India to their maiden gold in the 45th Chess Olympiad.

In-form Gukesh Dommaraju enjoyed an unbeaten run in the tournament and ensured India’s win on Sunday. Arjun Erigaisi was also brilliant with an impressive win over Jan Subelj and stretched India’s lead to 2-0. After ensuring a gold, India continued to dominate Slovenia as R Praggnanandhaa defeated Anton Demchenko to make it a 3-0 lead.

Indian women’s team of R Vaishali, Harika Dronavalli, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal and Tania Sachdev also  defeated Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5 to clinch the title. Indian men’s team won two bronze medals in 2014 and 2022 while the women’s team won a bronze medal in the 2022 edition in Chennai.
