New Delhi: Around 79 million people in India suffer from eye impairment and about 137 million have vision loss condition. Eye health is something that needs to be taken care of always. The symptoms of age-related eye disease is on rise, hence it requires timely care and checkup in order to protect our vision.

Dr Anjal Shah, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Cataract, and Refractive Surgeon, shared with News9, “Taking good care of your retina is how you begin to take good care of your vision. The retina is a nerve layer at the back of your eye; it is essential because it processes light and sends visual signals to the brain. Retinal diseases are the leading causes of vision loss and blindness worldwide and include diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). There are lifestyle practices that can help take care of your retina and maintain your sight, too.”

The following are some tips that can help one keep their vision healthy:

1. Make Sure That You Have Dilated Eye Exams regularly: Early detection of retinal conditions is vital for these regular dilated eye exams. Many retinal diseases do not show symptoms during their early stages; therefore, frequent eye exams will enable your doctor to catch any issues pre-they cause much harm

2. Consume Nutrient-Rich Foods: Proper maintenance of retinal health is with what you eat. In your diet, ensure you have these two antioxidants; lutein and zeaxanthin. The following will reduce the chances of one suffering AMD: kale, spinach, and any other green leafy vegetables.

3. Stop Smoking: Vision loss and blindness are more common in people who smoke. People who smoke are more prone to suffer from AMD as compared to people who are non-smokers. In such a case quitting smoke is the best step to ensure your good eye health.

4. Control or Manage your Blood Sugar, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol Levels: If one suffers from diabetes, it is important to control diabetes blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Proper levels prevent the occurrence of diabetic eye disease. It also prevents the risk of vision loss. One must also do regular physical activity, like walking and exercise, to protect the eyes from any type of macular problems.

5. Protect Your Eyes from Sun Rays: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can damage your eyes over time. To protect your vision, always wear sunglasses that offer 100 per cent UV protection. Additionally, consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors to shield your eyes from direct sunlight.

Polarised sunglasses are particularly beneficial for reducing glare during outdoor activities, such as walking or snow sports, further protecting your eyes from potential harm. Incorporating these habits daily routine, can protect your retina and help you maintain healthy vision for years to come.
