R Ashwin Records in 1st IND vs BAN Test

R Ashwin records in 1st IND vs BAN Test: One more home Test match went India’s way, and one more Man of the Match award was collected by senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

In the first India vs Bangladesh Test match, which was played in Chennai, the local boy R Ashwin stepped up with both bat and ball to take India to a 280-run victory. With the Chepauk faithful rallying behind him, Ashwin registered his sixth Test century, and second at this ground, in India’s first innings, and then took a six-wicket haul during Bangladesh’s second innings.

With this win in Chennai, India took an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series, thus extending their record of home dominance since 2013.

The legend of R Ashwin continues to grow as he adds more achievements to his kitty. In this 1st IND vs BAN Test match in Chennai, the all-rounder broke, created, or equaled a few more records.

R Ashwin records in 1st IND vs BAN Test:

1. Ashwin becomes 8th leading wicket-taker in Test cricket

With his six-for in the second innings, Ashwin went past the tally of Courtney Walsh, the former West Indies pacer, who took 519 Test wickets to become the 8th-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Ashwin now has 522 Test scalps in 101 matches at an average of 23.7. Only two bowlers—Muttiah Muralitharan and Glenn McGrath—have taken more Test wickets than Ashwin at a better average.

2. Becomes the bowler with joint-second-most Test five-wicket hauls, equals Shane Warne

This five-wicket haul was Ashwin’s 37th in Test cricket. With this, he equaled Shane Warne’s tally of 37 five-wicket hauls, which is the second-most in Test cricket.

Only Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, with 67 five-wicket hauls, is ahead of Ashwin. Muralitharan’s record is unlikely to be broken ever as Ashwin is already 38 years of age.

3. Records most five-wicket hauls in ICC WTC

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) began in 2019. R Ashwin was one of the main reasons India reached the final of both editions of the ICC WTC. And once again, he is helping his side remain at the top of the ICC WTC standings with his bowling.

Ashwin has taken 180 wickets in the ICC WTC history. Only Nathan Lyon, with 187 scalps, has more in this competition. However, Ashwin now has the most five-wicket hauls (11) in the ICC WTC as he leaves Lyon behind, who has 10 five-fors.

4. Ashwin does the double of a century and a five-for for the fourth time in Test cricket; only one player has done it more

This was the fourth time in his Test career that Ashwin took a five-wicket haul and scored a century in the same Test match. Only Ian Botham, the legendary England all-rounder, has done it more times than Ashwin—5 times.

Jacques Kallis, Shakib Al Hasan, Garry Sobers, Mushtaq Mohammad, and Ravindra Jadeja have attained this feat twice in their respective careers.

Ashwin also became the oldest player to do this double of a century and five-for in a Test match, and the first man to do it at the same venue twice.

5. Oldest player to take Test five-wicket haul for India

At the age of 38 years and 2 days at the start of the match, Ashwin becomes the oldest Indian player to take a Test five-wicket haul. Before Ashwin, this record belonged to Vinoo Mankad, who took a five-wicket haul at the age of 37 years and 306 days in the Peshwar Test against Pakistan in 1955.
