Ashwin Misses Out on 7th Wicket After Rohit Sharma Turns Down Rishabh Pant's DRS Request: WATCH

Ravichandran Ashwin recorded a historic five-wicket haul in the first Test against Bangladesh to help India secure a 280-run win in Chennai and go up 1-0 in the series. The veteran tweaker returned 6 for 88 in the second innings after a majestic hundred in the team’s first essay. However, it would have been 7 wickets in Ashwin’s kitty if Rohit Sharma had agreed to Rishabh Pant’s DRS request.

India needed just one wicket to win the Chennai Test with Ashwin bowling his 21st over in the innings. Hasan Mahmud looked to cut away the short ball but was hit halfway into the shot by the quick turn and bounce. Pant grabbed the ball and made an appeal that didn’t convince the umpire.

The keeper then turned to captain Rohit Sharma, requesting to take a review. The captain denied straightaway saying that it was off the elbow. But the TV replay told a completely different story altogether. The ball brushed Mahmud’s glove, creating a spike on the UltraEdge.

After watching the replay on the big screen, Pant said, “Out that yaar… dekh to lo replay (Look at the replay, it was out).” Luckily the misjudgement didn’t trouble India much as Ravindra Jadeja struck in the very next over to bowl out Bangladesh for 234.

A similar incident happened in the first innings that had left Mohammed Siraj frustrated. He had bowled a fuller one which Zakir Hasan looked to flick but played all around the ball and got hit on the pads. The pacer insisted on a review but Rohit Sharma felt that might be swinging down the leg.

After Siraj finished the over, the ball tracking showed that the ball was hitting the leg stump after pitching in line. While Rohit smiled sheepishly after watching the review, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant apologized to the pacer for a wrong judgement.

India win by 280 runs

Ashwin’s mastery after centuries by Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill helped India canter to a massive 280-run victory in the first Test with five sessions to spare. Maintaining a clean slate against the Asian neighbours, India now lead the two-match series 1-0.

Starting from their overnight 158 for four, Bangladesh were bundled out for 234 in their second innings as Ashwin scythed through their line-up (6/88). Ravindra Jadeja supported him with a three-wicket haul (3/58).
