New Delhi: India’s 280-run win over Bangladesh in the first Test in Chennai has helped them tighten their grip on the top spot of the World Test Championship standings.
Rohit Sharma’s boys were dominant from the very beginning in the first Test of a two-match series and blew away Bangladesh, who had recently notched up their maiden series victory over Pakistan.
Local boy Ravichandran Ashwin starred with a century and a six wicket haul for a man of the match performance while Subhman Gill and Rishabh Pant, back in the Test fold for the first time since his car accident in December 2022, scored crucial centuries.
India’s Chennai Test win fetched them 12 points, ensuring their supremacy on top of the table (point percentage 71.67%), increasing their lead over Australia (62.50%).
After their 2-0 win in Pakistan, Bangladesh, had jumped to the fourth spot but now dropped to sixth (39.29%) behind Sri Lanka and England.
Sri Lanka climb up
Sri Lanka’s win over New Zealand in Galle have enable them to jump up to the third spot. The Kiwis were third before the Galle match but after a 63-run defeat that saw them trail 0-1 in a two-Test series, they dropped a spot to fourth.
Sri Lanka’s win was their fourth in eight matches, moving them an even 50% of possible World Test Championship points and they would need to beat New Zealand again and register a clean sweep of South Africa, apart from beating Australia 2-0 in a home series early next year to conform a spot in the WTC final.
Beaten finalists in the previous two WTC editions, India have nine more Tests in the calendar cycle and need at least four wins to conform their place in the championship clash.
