PM Modi met Palestinian President amid tension with Israel; assured him of India's support

PM Modi met Palestinian President: In the Middle East, war-like situations are developing between Palestine as well as Israel and Lebanon's extremist organization Hezbollah. Meanwhile, India's PM Narendra Modi met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in New York on Monday. During this meeting, PM Modi expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and assured Palestine of India's continued support.

Sharing a picture of his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, PM Modi wrote in a post, “Met President Mahmoud Abbas in New York. Reiterated India's support for the early restoration of peace and stability in the region. Exchanged views to further strengthen long-term friendship with the people of Palestine.” Earlier, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote about this meeting, 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas today on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and also spoke of India's always supporting the people of Palestine.'

During this, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. PM Modi also met Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. On the other hand, the Quad leaders have advocated a two-state solution regarding Israel and Palestine. A joint statement said- “We are moving towards a two-state solution. This decision has been taken keeping in mind Israel's legitimate security concerns. At the same time, this decision is also committed to an independent Palestinian state. Doing so provides a just, lasting and safe solution for both Israel and Palestine.”

It further said that “any unilateral action that undermines the prospects of a two-state solution needs to be stopped. This includes the expansion of settlements by Israel and a halt to violence by both sides. We stress the need to prevent the conflict from escalating.”
