Ravichandran Ashwin is full of praise for Lubber Pandhu

Tamizharasan Pachamuthu's sports drama Lubber Pandhu opened in theatres on September 20 to positive word-of-mouth. The latest to join the ‘fan club’ of the film is cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, who just won Player of the Match for his hundred and six wickets in India’s Chennai Test match against Bangladesh. An elated Ashwin took to his X page and shared, “Movie making is a serious business and it involves so much hard work and creativity, hence I largely look at the positives in any movie and speak very little about the negatives. But, today I can’t resist but mention that I enjoyed a movie after years and it’s a lesson on how authentic a movie can be made beyond it being just about the cliches that have been followed in recent sport films. Tamil movies based on cricket often tend to deviate from the core and deliver what they wish to convey and that’s exactly why Lubber Pandhu struck a special chord for me. So authentic, so real and not even one character in the movie looked like they were searching or found wanting.”

An ardent film buff himself, Ashwin congratulated the director, cast, and crew of the film. Starring Harish Kalyan, Kaali Venkat, Attakathi Dinesh, Swaswika Vijay, and Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, among others, Lubber Pandhu tells the story of an intense rivalry between gully cricket players in a village. In CE’s review of Lubber PandhuSudhir Srinivasan has written that “it’s a film of great balance really, never allowing itself to get carried away by a singular emotion,” that “it has the soul of a sports film and the mind of a well-crafted drama,” and that “it approaches” some of its “cricket portions like it were a romance.”
