All eyes on Kidambi Srikanth as he returns after long layoff

The 2024 edition of the Macau Open BWF Super 300 is set to begin on the 24th of September at the Macau East Asian Games Dome and will go on until the 29th of September.

This will be the 28th competition of the 2024 BWF World Tour and the upcoming Macau Open is also a part of the long-held Macau Open Championships.

The tournament will feature a 23-person Indian contingent across various categories, but the most notable name that fans will be looking out is that of Kidambi Srikanth.

All eyes on Kidambi Srikanth

Since failing to qualify for the Paris Olympics, the former world no.1 shuttler has been absent from competitive badminton and is set to take the stage at the Macau Open.

Since being a part of the famous Indian team that won the 2022 Thomas Cup, Srikanth’s career has been marred by bad form and injury.

The former World Championships silver medallist has not been able to go past the round of 16 in nine tournaments this year, and apart from reaching the final of the Swiss Open in March, he has had a poor run of form.

He retired hurt in the Singapore Open in May and has since remained absent from all BWF tournaments.

After four months of absence from competitive badminton, he will enter the tournament as the sixth seed. He will face Israel’s Daniil Dubovenko in his opening round in the main draw of the competition.

Treesa-Gayatri in action, Bansod pulls out

Apart from him, prominent women’s doubles duo Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will also participate in this tournament as the third seed.

After getting knocked out in the first round of the recently concluded China Open, the highest-rated Indian women’s doubles duo will be looking to make amends in the Macau Open.

They recently climbed to 23rd in the BWF world rankings, up by three spots from the 26th position.

They will face Japanese duo Akari Sato and Maya Taguchi in the first round of the women’s doubles main draw.

The mixed doubles main draw will feature the Indian pair of Sumeet Reddy and Sikki Reddy.

Malvika Bansod, who made headlines last week by defeating Paris Olympics bronze medalist Gregoria Tunjung in the China Open, has pulled out of the Macau Open.

The competition will not feature any Indian participation in the men’s doubles section.
