Tech giants Google, Nvidia to increase focus and investment on AI in India

NEW YORK New York: Technology giants Google and Nvidia will expand their engagement in India and focus more on leveraging artificial intelligence technology in the country, top executives of the companies said on Monday after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Jensen Huang, CEO of graphics processing unit (GPU) major Nvidia, said the Prime Minister has always been keen to learn about artificial intelligence, its potential and opportunities for India.

“I have enjoyed many meetings with the Prime Minister. He is a great student and whenever I meet him, he wants to learn about technology, artificial intelligence, the potential and opportunities for India, its impact on India, society and industry,” Huang said. Huang estimates Nvidia has an 88 per cent market share in the GPU segment, which is in huge demand for AI workloads worldwide.

He said India is home to some of the world's greatest computer scientists, which is a huge opportunity. “Artificial intelligence is also a new industry, a new manufacturing industry. I'm looking forward to partnering very deeply with India to make this possible. We have many partnerships with India. First of all, we are helping India gain access to our most advanced technologies,” Huang said.

Nvidia has partnered with Yotta Data Services, which plans to expand its GPU stable to 32,768 units by the end of 2025. Huang said India is home to the third-largest startup economy and all the new generations of startups are working on AI.

“Every IIT has an Nvidia AI Centre of Excellence. We are teaching professionals. We are teaching students how to advance in this new world of AI. AI is a very complex technology, but at the end of the day it enables a country to leverage this technology in a way that was never possible before. AI has truly democratised computing. This is India's moment, you have to take advantage of it,” Huang said.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the prime minister is focused on transforming India with his Digital India vision and is pushing the company to build in India and design in India. “He challenged us to think about applications in healthcare, education, agriculture, and he is also thinking about India's infrastructure, whether it's data centres, power, energy, and investing to make sure India can transform. We are strongly investing in AI in India, and we look forward to doing more,” Pichai said.
