Reasons why Laapataa Ladies deserves a spot in Oscars 2025 nominations

New Delhi: The Film Federation of India announced Laapataa Ladies as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025 in Chennai on Monday (September 23, 2024). Directed by Kiran Rao, the film was chosen from a list of 29 entries, including Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal and Zarin Shihab’s Aattam.

The 13-member selection committee was led by Assamese director Jahnu Barua. It unanimously chose this Aamir Khan production to compete for the Best International Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Released on March 1, 2024, Laapataa Ladies features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan in key roles. While many vouch for the soulful essence of the film, there are several reasons why Laapataa Ladies deserves a spot in the Oscars 2025 nominations.

What makes Laapataa Ladies special?

Authentic Indian Flavour: Laapataa Ladies is a satirical take on gender dynamics and patriarchy in rural India. Its themes resonate not just with audiences from smaller towns but also with urban viewers, evoking a sense of connection to their roots. The film stands apart as it doesn’t borrow heavily from Western cinema, offering a uniquely Indian experience.

Relevant Message: While Laapataa Ladies excels in entertainment, it also conveys a message that is relevant to both: rural and urban audiences. Despite addressing an important social issue, the film maintains its engaging pace without becoming preachy.

Freshness in Cast and Script: The film’s originality is evident from its script to its cast. The actors, mostly newcomers, deliver performances that exceed expectations. Kiran Rao’s decision to cast fresh faces ensures that the narrative shines without being overshadowed by star power.

Soulful Music: Ram Sampath’s music complements the film’s storyline without feeling forced, challenging the Western stereotype that Bollywood overuses songs and dance sequences. The music blends seamlessly with the script, enhancing the global appeal.

Subtle Humour: Humour is masterfully interwoven into the film’s narrative. Kiran Rao strikes the right balance between humour and emotion, creating a captivating storyline that delivers its message effectively while keeping the audience engaged.
