Amazon's festive season demand will increase this year, an opportunity to increase contribution to Digital India Mission

New Delhi : E-commerce company Amazon has stepped up its preparations for the upcoming festive season. It is expected that this year there can be an increase in demand for this festive season sale. The company's operating vice president Abhinav Singh has talked about long term opportunities in India in an interview. He has also said how Amazon India sees competition from other e-commerce companies and fast-growing companies.

He denied the allegations of “deep discounting”, saying that as a marketplace, Amazon does not control pricing. It is the prerogative of sellers on its platform. However, Singh refused to comment on the anti-competition investigation conducted by the Competition Commission of India (CCI), but insisted that Amazon fully complies with the laws.

huge opportunity

He said the company sees India as a “long term opportunity” with “huge” potential and a place where it is committed to building a large business, connecting millions of sellers digitally, serving a large number of customers and building a large system of entrepreneurs. Singh said, “This is a long-term and very large opportunity, look at it from the perspective of a billion people, with an economy that is going to be the third largest economy very soon.

Digital India Mission

So there is a lot happening for India from that perspective, it is a very optimistic thing for me as an Indian and it makes me really excited to work here, help transform the digital infrastructure and contribute to the government's Digital India mission.”

direct and indirect jobs

He said that Amazon India is also strengthening its logistics network and fulfillment center system ahead of the upcoming festivals. The purpose of expanding infrastructure and capacity building is to accelerate the speed of supply. Amazon has recently announced that it has created more than 1,10,000 job opportunities (seasonal) in its operations system to meet the increasing demand of customers for the upcoming festivals. These include direct and indirect jobs in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow and Chennai.

control the pricing

On the allegations of controlling pricing and deep discounting, Singh claimed that Amazon as a marketplace does not control pricing, which is completely the prerogative of the sellers. He said, “We have very high standards of compliance. We make sure that we try our best to comply with every law of the country. As far as controlling pricing or (charging) deep discounts is concerned, we as a marketplace do not control pricing. Sellers price products at the level they like. So I have nothing further to comment on this.”

Strengthening the system and infrastructure

The US e-commerce company is facing increasing competition from companies like Flipkart and SoftBank-backed Meesho in India. It is also facing competition from quick commerce companies like Blinkit and Zepto, which are rapidly making inroads in the market. This is because today's busy consumer is liking the convenience of instant delivery of groceries and many other household items. However, Singh said that the company's strategy is not being determined or defined by the competition, but Amazon's entire focus is on providing the best experience to the customers and strengthening the system and infrastructure.
