“Abusing You”? Ravi Ashwin Comments On Young Indian Bowlers

Ravi Ashwin Comments On Young Indian Bowlers: Indian Cricket Team allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin recently shared an interesting conversation he had with his wife about the future of Indian cricket and how young players in the country might perceive him.

Despite doing this for well over a decade, Ashwin is still one of the most effective finger-spinners in the world. Not only that, but the veteran has also always been more than handy with the bat.

He displayed his acumen in both those disciplines during India’s recent first of two Test matches against Bangladesh. Being played in his home stadium of Chepauk in Chennai, ‘Ashwin Anna’ scored a fine century in the first inning when India’s top order had collapsed. He, along with fellow allrounder Ravindra Jadeja (86), showed why they are two of the best red-ball cricketers in the world.

The 38-year-old spin maestro then showed why he is one of the most feared spinners in world cricket, especially at home conditions, when he took six wickets in the fourth inning, cruising the Bangladeshi middle-order.

Playing his 101st Test match, Ashwin made his Test debut for the Men in Blue in 2011. Only one of two players in the current squad to have played over 100 Tests, Ravi Ashwin has taken the eighth most wickets in the history of the format with 522 and the second-highest for an Indian behind Anil Kumble.

But having played for the national team for so long, Ravichandran Ashwin has clearly been occupying a spot that is sought after by several spin bowlers in India who have not been able to replace the legendary allrounder.

Ashwin recently revealed a comical conversation he had with his wife recently. While the two were watching Duleep Trophy 2024 highlights, his wife Prithi Narayanan wondered what the young Indian spinners would think about a veteran occupying a spot in the national team. He said this in a video on his YouTube channel.

“We were watching some highlights the day before yesterday. My wife told me something: ‘These off-spinners, won’t they be abusing you in their minds while bowling?’ I wondered why and realised they must be thinking, ‘When will he leave for us to get a break?” said Ashwin.

He then went on to reveal that he used to feel the same way when he was a young prospect, adding,

“Suddenly, I felt a little off. I realised, yes, I am in that phase now. Even when we were young, we used to wonder about our place in the side. Everybody does it. When I look at it now, it brings me to reality. It makes you realise you have played for a lot of years.”

Ravichandran Ashwin will be a part of the squad for the upcoming India vs Bangladesh second Test, which will start on September 27. He will then most likely play in the three-Test series against New Zealand before the big one, the five-match 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia down under.
