Rohan Bopanna-Ivan Dodig crash out of China Open

Rohan Bopanna and his new men’s doubles partner Ivan Dodig of Croatia crashed out of the China Open, an ATP 500 event, in Beijing on Saturday.

In a second-round clash, Bopanna and Dodig suffered a 5-7, 6(4)-7(7) defeat to Francisco Cerundolo and Nicolas Jarry.

In a hard-fought match, the Indo-Croatian duo won 82 per cent points on the first serve compared to 78 per cent by Cerundolo and Jarry. However, the Argentine and Chilean pair’s ability to win points on the second serve hurt Bopanna and Dodig’s chances.

Cerundolo and Jarry won 83 per cent points on the second serve compared to 67 per cent for Bopanna and Dodig.

In terms of service points, Bopanna and Dodig trailed Cerundolo and Jarry as they won 50 per cent of points compared to 53 by their opponents.

In the quarterfinals, Cerundolo and Jarry will face off against Jamie Murray and John Peers.

This was Bopanna’s first event since he paired up with Dodig for the third time in his career.

The 44-year-old Indian previously teamed up with Dodig in 2017 and 2021, with their best result being reaching the final at the 2017 ATP Montreal Masters 1000 event.

Bopanna and Dodig were also teammates, playing for the Indian Aces, in the erstwhile International Premier Tennis League (IPTL).
