MI will benefit the most from the new retention policy of the Indian Premier League

The biggest question at the moment is how many players the franchises will be allowed to retain before the mega auction of the Indian Premier League 2025. Every team wants to retain its core players so that their brand value remains intact. In such a situation, now news is coming that the Board of Control for Cricket in India i.e. BCCI can allow IPL franchises to retain 5 players, however if this happens then the teams will not have the option of Right to Match during the mega auction. Mumbai Indians can get the biggest benefit from this decision of BCCI because they will have a chance to retain Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya in the team.

In a recent meeting held at its headquarters, BCCI had discussed the retainership of players with all the 10 team owners. Most of the franchises wanted to retain 5-6 players as this would give them continuity. And it is understood that after considering their request, BCCI has complied with the request as it believes that retaining the five players will also ensure that the brand value of the franchise is protected.

Before the 2022 season, franchises were allowed to retain 4 players with a maximum of 3 Indians and 2 foreign players. However, it is not yet clear how many domestic and foreign players the teams can retain in IPL 2025.

With five players likely to be retained, all eyes are now on Mumbai Indians. Their core team has remained the same for the last decade, but after the disappointing performance under Pandya's captaincy this year, it will be interesting to see how they integrate their retainers into the team.

When Mumbai retained four players in 2022, Rohit received the highest amount of Rs 16 crore, followed by Bumrah (Rs 12 crore), Suryakumar (Rs 8 crore) and Kieron Pollard (Rs 6 crore). This time, with Bumrah and Suryakumar's stocks rising, it will be interesting to see at what price they are retained, provided they reach an agreement with the players.
