Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder Case: Doctors’ strike ends, but protest will continue, these are their 5 demands

The doctors have said that they will continue on strike until concrete action is taken on all fronts.

Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder Case: The protesting junior doctors have decided to end their strike on Friday after West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant assured them of security.

Amid calls by the government and the judiciary to return to work, the doctors put forward five demands to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to end their protest and return to work.

Although they were assured that no adverse action would be taken against them and the government would act on their requests, the doctors have said that they will continue on strike until concrete action is taken on all fronts.

After two failed attempts to negotiate with the Mamata Banerjee-led government, the doctors put forward the following demands before the authorities.

demands of doctors

On Monday, 42 doctors met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other government officials and agreed to most of the demands of the doctors.

1. According to the minutes of the meeting, the government agreed to sanction Rs 100 crore for the development of infrastructure in hospitals and reconstruction of patient welfare committees.

2. A special task force comprising the Police Commissioner and representatives of junior doctors will also be constituted under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary.

3. Government will also set up grievance redressal mechanism in hospitals and medical colleges

4. Doctors demanded removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal over allegations of mishandling of the case and tampering with evidence. They also demanded the removal of DC (North) Abhishek Gupta.

5. They also demanded the removal of the Director of Health Services (DHS) and the Director of Medical Education (DME) from their posts in the state.

The government on Tuesday appointed Manoj Kumar Verma in place of Vineet Goyal. He also removed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), DHS and DME from their posts.

In line with Supreme Court orders, the government is working towards implementing updated security mechanisms such as installing CCTV cameras in hospitals and increasing police deployment.

However, the formation of a taskforce and a comprehensive system for grievance redressal are yet to materialize.

Although the doctors expressed happiness over the replacement of the police commissioner and health officials, they remained skeptical about the government fulfilling all their demands.
