Tribute to McGonagall: Harry Potter’s cast mourns death of co-star Maggie Smith

New Delhi: Dame Maggie Smith, best known for her role as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise, took her last breath on September 27, 2024. The actress died at the age of 89. For Harry Potter fans, McGonagall was a pillar of strength, kindness and love. Similarly, the late-actresses’ co-stars remembered Maggie Smith as a real, self-honouring and funny individual.

When the news of her passing spread, Maggie’s co-stars from Harry Potter – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Bonny Wright, and Gary Oldman paid their respects to the veteran actress.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Daniel Radcliffe recalled working with Maggie for the first time. He remembered that at the age of 9, he had no idea who Maggie was, but his parents were ecstatic that he would be working with an actress of her calibre.

Emma Watson, who played the role of Hermione Granger took to her Instagram story to pay respect to the late actress and echoed a similar sentiment to Daniel. She wrote that although she did not know about Maggie’s legend, she expressed gratefulness to be able to share an acting pace with her. Calling Maggie Smith the ‘true definition of greatness’, Emma Watson added, “Maggie, there were a lot of male professors and by God you held your own. Thank you for all of your kindness. I’ll miss you.”

Rupert Grint, also known as Ronald Weasly, remembered Maggie Smith as she shared a picture of their Yule Ball dance in the fourth instalment, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He recalled this exact moment and called Maggie special, hilarious and kind. In addition to the main cast, the author of the Harry Potter books, JK Rowling, took to X and wrote, “Somehow I thought she’d live forever. RIP Dame Maggie Smith.”

Recalling the same moment as Rupert, Bonnie Wright, who portrayed the role of Ginny Weasley, also remembered Maggie’s ‘perfect balance of sass and loving care that McGonagall has’. Gary Oldman, who played the role of Sirius Black in the Harry Potter franchise spoke to Entertainment Weekly and said, “Her magnificent film performances remain for all to see and enjoy. Such an artist comes along about every other generation. If one is lucky.”
