Sheikh Syed Hassan Nasrallah, born in 1960, had been leading the Lebanese fundamentalist organization Hezbollah for decades. During this period, Nasrallah had transformed Hezbollah into a powerful political and military force. Nasrallah's early life was spent in the Borj Hammoud area of Beirut and he came from an ordinary family. His father Abdul Karim used to sell fruits and vegetables. Nasrallah was the eldest of his parents' nine children. Nasrallah, just 15 years old, joined the 'Amal Movement' in 1975 during the Lebanese Civil War. Which was a Shia militia (group of fighters) at that time. During this period, Nasrallah also went to Najaf, Iraq, but soon returned and joined Amal again.

How did you become an enemy of Israel?

When Israel attacked Lebanon in 1982, Nasrallah and some others separated from Amal and formed a new organization named 'Islamic Amal'. Which today people know as Hezbollah. In 1985, Hezbollah announced its existence in an open message, calling the Soviet Union and America the enemies of Islam. This terrorist organization also demanded the destruction of Israel. At the same time, Nasrallah took command of the organization in 1992 after Israel assassinated the then Hezbollah Chief Abbas al-Mousavi.

After Nasrallah took over the reins, Hezbollah's influence continued to grow. He grew the organization from just a militia to a political and military force. During this time, Hezbollah strengthened its hold on the southern parts of Lebanon, forcing Israeli forces to retreat. After which the image of the organization emerged as a major enemy of Israel. Nasrallah's leadership abilities established him as an influential leader not only among Hezbollah supporters but throughout the Shia world. At present, Hezbollah plays an important role in Lebanese politics.
