Recently we have seen that many packaged foods, spice products have failed quality tests and have been withdrawn from the international market. But many pills in the market fail the quality test.
More than 50 medicines, including calcium and vitamin D3 supplements, anti-diabetes pills and high blood pressure drugs, have failed quality tests by India’s drug regulator. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has declared 53 medicines as “Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) alert”.
A total of 53 more medicines are included in the list, which includes Vitamin C and D3 tablets Shelcol, Vitamin B complex and Vitamin C softgels, antacid Pan-D, Paracetamol tablets IP 500 mg, Glimepiride, high blood pressure drug Telmisartan.
These drugs are marketed by several companies including Hetero Drugs, Alkem Laboratories, Hindustan Antibiotics Limited (HAL), Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited, Meg Life Sciences, Pure and Cure Healthcare. But before this these pills had passed the quality test.
Metronidazole, a widely used drug to treat stomach infections, is manufactured by PSU Hindustan Antibiotics Limited (HAL). It is also used on a large scale but now this medicine has failed in quality testing. For example, the antibiotics Clavam 625 and Pan D from Kolkata-based drug-testing laboratory Alkem Health Science were found to be counterfeit. But organizations reject this.
Similarly, some medicines are brought in the market as fake medicines using the names and labels of renowned companies. These do not pass the quality test and are withdrawn from the market. There is also an argument that these are not the medicines of the real company.
It is difficult for consumers to identify which of these pills are genuine and which are fake. It can be detected only through laboratory. It is impossible to detect even medically.
But it is not yet known whether most of the medicines that failed the quality test are the official medicines of the organization or fake medicines supplied from the illegal market.
In this list of tablets, most of us have used Paracetamol tablet, this tablet is used in case of minor fever and cold. At present this has failed the quality test.
