Record five retentions in 'IPL 2025' auction

Kanpur, September 29 (IANS). The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set for one of its biggest changes ahead of the 2025 season. The tournament governing body is likely to approve major changes in the retention rules at its annual general meeting (AGM) to be held in Bengaluru on Sunday.

IANS has learned that the 10 IPL teams are expected to retain a maximum of five players (3 Indians and 2 foreigners) each, along with one Right-to-Match (RTM) card during the 'IPL 2025' auction. There will also be an option to use.

If approved, it would be the highest number of retentions in IPL history, surpassing last season's limits. The IPL Governing Council will soon finalize these rules, with an official announcement expected before the mega auction for the 2025 season.

Sources also told IANS that the RTM card, which was last used in the 2018 mega auction, may make a comeback. This card allows franchises to buy back their players by matching the highest bid made by another team during the auction. It is also unclear whether the IPL will impose any limits on foreign retention.

The franchise purse cap in the IPL 2025 mega auction is likely to be around Rs 120-150 crore.

The exact amount to be deducted from the team purse to retain each player is also yet to be confirmed. This will determine how much budget teams will have left to bid for new players during the auction. In previous auctions, the retention slabs varied depending on the number of players retained, with higher deductions for higher retentions.

Earlier, the uncapped player retention fee was set at Rs 4 crore. By categorizing Dhoni or other players like him as uncapped, franchises can effectively retain their star players at much lower prices, giving them substantial returns in the auction.
