World champion Aditi Swami exits in quarterfinal

Archer Aditi Swami, the World Championships gold medallist, bowed out in the quarterfinals of the women’s U21 compound individual category at the Asian Youth Archery Championships in Chinese Taipei on Sunday.

Despite her early exit, India clinched three bronze medals, and six archers advanced to the gold medal matches in the individual elimination rounds across both the U18 and U21 categories.

On Tuesday, in an all-Indian final in the women’s U21 compound category, Avneet Kaur will take on Dnyaneshwari Dnyandev Gadadhe.

Avneet, the top seed in this category, scored a personal best of 702 in the ranking round, while Dnyaneshwari was seeded second.

However, the favorite, Aditi Swami, had a disappointing tournament as she failed to win a medal, losing a close quarterfinal match (143-144) to Bangladesh’s Puspita Zaman.

In the men’s U21 compound category, Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru reached the final, while top-seeded Kushal Dalal won the bronze medal with a 149-147 victory over Andrey Tyutyun of Kazakhstan.

In the U21 recurve discipline, India had a mixed outing as none of the male archers were able to qualify for the quarterfinals, leaving them empty-handed in the individual elimination rounds.

On the other hand, Bhargaviben Vargishkumar Bhagora qualified for the gold medal match in the women’s recurve category. But, Basanto Mahato narrowly lost in the bronze medal match to a player from Chinese Taipei.

Two bronze medals in the U18 category

India won two bronze medals in the U18 category in compound archery. Sukhmandeep Singh clinched the bronze medal in the men’s event, while Ekta Rani won the bronze medal in the women’s category.

Sukhmandeep won his match 148-146 against Iranian opponent Khodaparast Farhang, while Ekta triumphed 145-144 over Chinese Taipei’s Wei An Ke in the bronze medal match.

Meanwhile, Prithika Pradeep advanced to the final of the women’s compound with a 140-138 victory over second-seeded Ekta. She will face Yu-erh Chiu of Chinese Taipei in the final.

In the recurve category, Sharvari Somnath Shende reached the final with a 6-2 win over South Korean archer Minjeong Kim. Pranjal Tholiya, however, narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in the women’s recurve category.

In men’s recurve archery, India missed out on a medal, as Smaran Sarvesh Lavanya Rajkumar lost a close bronze medal match in a shoot-off to Hao Jie Zhan of Chinese Taipei.
