Born in 1970 in Sonipat, Haryana, Deepa Malik's father Bal Krishna Nagpal was in the Indian Army. His brother Vikram Nagpal was also a Brigadier. A turning point in Deepa's life came when she was diagnosed with a spinal tumor in 1999, due to which her lower body stopped functioning and she had to rely on a wheelchair. However, he did not give up and focused on the new chapter of his life.

She runs campaigns for people suffering from serious diseases and actively participates in the programs of social organizations. Apart from being a shot putter, Deepa is also a swimmer, biker, javelin thrower and discus thrower. By winning a silver medal at the Rio Paralympic Games, she became the first Indian female athlete to win a medal at the Paralympic Games.
