The Indian government is on alert after WHO declared Mpox Clade 1 a global health emergency. In such a situation, notifications are being issued continuously by the Health Ministry. This letter provides guidelines to all states regarding MPOX.

This information was given to all the states

The Health Ministry has requested all States/UTs to sensitize people about the disease, its mode of spread, need/importance of timely reporting and preventive measures. Special care should be taken to ensure that panic does not spread among people regarding this.

The first case was found in Kerala

The first case of Mpox Clade 1B has been reported in Kerala, which was recently confirmed by Health Ministry sources. The man is 38 years old and has recently returned from Dubai. At present the person has been kept in isolation and is undergoing treatment.

These instructions were given to the officers

The Health Ministry's letter said that only senior officials of health facilities in states and districts should review public health preparedness.

These are the guidelines for the states

  • Identify isolation facilities in hospitals to care for suspected and confirmed cases. Availability and promotion of necessary logistics and trained human resources in such facilities.
  • All suspected Mpox cases should be isolated and strict infection prevention and control measures implemented.
  • Treatment is symptomatic and should follow available treatment guidelines.
  • Skin lesion samples from any patient with possible symptoms of mumps should be immediately sent to a designated laboratory. At the same time, samples of patients whose results are positive should be sent to ICMR-NIV for clade determination.
  • A strong clinical testing capacity is already available. There are 36 laboratories supported by ICMR across the country and three commercial PCR kits approved by ICMR. This has also been approved by CDSCO.
  • By implementing the above preventive measures and following the recommended management guidelines we can protect the health and welfare of individuals and reduce the impact of mpox outbreaks.
  • The ministry's letter said that the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will closely monitor the situation. Will provide all necessary assistance to the states and union territories in this regard.
