Uganda's Olympic gold medalist Cheptegei will participate in Delhi Half Marathon

New Delhi. 10,000m Olympic gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei will participate in the 2024 Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon. Uganda's star sprinter Cheptegei retired from track events after his victory at the Paris Olympics and made it clear that he will now compete in the marathon.

“Cheptegei will compete at the 2024 Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon in India,” Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) president Dominic Otuchette told Xinhua. “He will use the half marathon to better prepare before bigger marathon events.”

Last weekend the Ugandan star finished second in 45 minutes and five seconds at the 38th edition of the Dam Tot Damloop 10-mile race in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Otuchet explained that Cheptegei would need to run several half marathon races to quickly acclimate to road races.

“We are confident that Cheptegei will continue to improve in the road race as he is a determined and disciplined athlete who knows how to be a champion,” Otuchette said.

Cheptegei, Uganda's only gold medalist at Paris 2024, will also focus on qualifying for the marathon at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships in 2025. To secure his spot, he will have to clock a marathon time of under 2:06:30 in a qualifying race next year.
