Anil Patel to Devajit Saikia – List of contenders to replace Jay Shah as BCCI Secretary

The post of BCCI secretary will go vacant after Jay Shah assumes his office as International Cricket Council chairman on December 1, 2024.

New Delhi: Following Jay Shah’s appointment as ICC chairman, there have been several debates as who will become the next BCCI secretary. With Shah set to assume his office at the International Cricket Council on December 1, the race for his replacement at the BCCI is heating up with numerous names cropping up to take the coveted post. According to a PTI report, there are as many as four candidates to replace Shah at BCCI. Let’s take a look at them.

Rohan Jaitley

Son of former Union Minister and BCCI vice-president, Arun Jaitley, Rohan is currently the president of Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) and recently successfully conducted the inaugural Delhi Premier League. However, he remained tight-lipped on BCCI secretary matter when asked about the rumours.

Ashish Shelar

Ashish Shelar is an Indian politician representing BJP and currently the treasurer at BCCI. Shelar has been involved in cricket administration for a decade now and is also the president of BJP wing in Mumbai.

Devajit Saikia

Another name that is cropping up to replace Shah is Devajit Saikia who is currently the joint-secretary at BCCI. A former cricketer himself, Saikia represented Assam in Ranji Trophy and later took over as the secretary of Assam Cricket Association. As the secretary he brought in major changes in ACA and was a part of the core team that was responsible for successfully hosting the first-ever T20I between India and Australia at the new ACA Stadium, Barsapara in 2017 followed by an ODI between India and the West Indies the following year.

Anil Patel

Anil Patel is currently the secretary of Gujarat Cricket Association and is being tipped as a contender for BCCI secretary’s post. Patel was the Team India manager for the WTC final against Australia in 2023. He was also the manager of the Indian team on several tours in the past and served in the same capacity for the Indian U-19 team that lost to Bangladesh in the World Cup final in 2020

Arun Singh Dhumal and Avishek Dalmiya, who were elected to the IPL Governing Council during BCCI’s AGM on Saturday, had also emerged as names to replace Shah at BCCI.
