70th National Film Awards: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty receives the greatest honor

On Tuesday, artists and filmmakers were honored at the Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi featuring the 70th National Film Awards.

Rishab Shetty, star of Kantara, received an award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Speaking with the media, Rishab stated that his goal as a filmmaker is to create movies that alter society. “Every film has an impact. I thank the audience. A National Award is a very prestigious reward for an artist,” he stated in conversation with the reporters.  Kantara was also the recipient of the Best Popular Film award for its family-friendly entertainment.

The greatest honor in Indian cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, was given to veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the motion picture industry. The President and other dignitaries in attendance gave the renowned actor a standing ovation on the occasion.

In conversation with YEARSMithun Chakraborty stated, “I can only say that I dedicate this award to my family and all my fans around the world. Where I come from, from a blind alley in Kolkata, I never imagined that a boy from the footpath could receive such a big honour.”

The Best Actress award in a Leading Role was shared by Nithya Menen for the Tamil film Thiruchitrambalam and Manasi Parekh for the Gujarati film Kutch Express. For his role in Unchai, Sooraj R. Barjatya also won the Best Director prize. At the ceremony, the Malayalam movie Attam was declared the Best Feature Film.

Nithya Menen stated, “It feels wonderful, and it’s a very important moment. I would like to dedicate the award to my co-stars and the entire team of Thiruchitrambalam.

Master of music A R Rahman expressed his pride at winning his seventh National Film Award. He earned the Best Music Director (Background music) award for his efforts in Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: I. “This award is special because this is my seventh National Award. My first National Film Award was for the film Roja with Mani Ratnam. This film is also with him. Whenever I work with him it is very special, he gets the best out of all of us,” he added. With his performance in the movie Gulmohar, actor Manoj Bajpayee won a Special Mention, earning him his fourth National Film Award. In an interview with ANI, Manoj praised the film’s director and other co-stars as well as the audience for the prize.

“It is a huge thing when such a small film makes its presence felt at National Film Awards I feel honoured. Also, I can’t take all the credit myself. I thank my director, who offered me this film, and all the people who worked with me, all the co-actors who supported my work,” he mentioned.

In August 2024, the 70th National Film Awards winners were announced. A year behind schedule, the National Awards were conferred post the due effect of the Covid pandemic.
