Maharishi Valmiki, whose name was earlier Ratnakar, was born in a pious Brahmin family, but due to being in contact with dacoits, he started looting and killing and this became his means of livelihood. Whatever he found on the way, They used to loot his property. One day he met Devarshi Narad ji and he said to Narad ji, 'Take out whatever you have! Otherwise you will have to lose your life. Devarshi Narad said, I have nothing besides this veena and clothes. If you want, you can take them, but why are you becoming a part of this terrible sin by doing this cruel act? Valmiki's hard heart softened a bit after hearing the soft words of Devarshi. Happened. He said God! This is my means of livelihood. Through this I support my family. Devarshi said, 'You go and first ask your family members whether they are entitled to support you only or will they also become partners in your sins. We will not go anywhere until you return. If you don't believe then tie me to this tree. Ratnakar tied Devarshi to a tree and went to his home. He asked his family members one by one, 'Will you also take part in my sins or do you only want maintenance from me? Everyone said in one voice, 'It is your duty to maintain us. How you bring in money is your thing to think about. Hearing this, we will not be a partaker of your sins, his eyes of knowledge were opened. After this, he immediately proceeded towards the forest and untied the bonds of Devarshi Narad and fell at his feet in mourning. Narad ji gave him patience and advised him to chant the name of Ram, but due to the terrible sins he had committed in the past, he could not pronounce the name of Ram. After that Narad ji, after thinking carefully, asked them to chant 'Mara-Mara'. With divine inspiration, he left worldly life (attachment) and concentrated on God and performed rigorous penance. He became so engrossed in penance that termites made their roots all over his body, hence he was named Valmiki. By continuously chanting the name of God, Valmiki now became a sage. His earlier cruelty now changed into kindness towards all living beings.

Maharishi Valmiki used to perform penance on the banks of river Tamsa near Ayodhya. He used to go to the river every morning for bath. One day when he was returning after taking bath in the morning, he saw a pair of crow birds playing. Valmiki was enjoying seeing them, when suddenly a hunter shot an arrow and killed one of the pair of Kraunch birds, then the other bird sat in a nearby tree and started mourning after seeing its dead companion. Seeing this pathetic scene, this verse came out from the mouth of Valmiki.
You have established me, O Nishada, as the eternal equal
That one of the pair of crows was fascinated by lust

That is, O hunter! You have killed one of the pair of Mohit Kraunch birds at work, so you will never be able to regain dignity and peace.

Maharishi Valmiki wrote many works while staying in his ashram on the banks of river Tamsa, which also includes the famous book Ramayana.
